What does it mean to you?
Can you imagine laying down your very life for it? Facing unimaginable pain, suffering, terror? To protect your loved ones and to ensure that future generations had the right to live in peace. Free from persecution.
Free to live in a democracy, chosen by the people, for the people.
Can you imagine the courage that would take? The selflessness?
It seems more meaningful this year, pondering all that is unfolding in our world.
My grandfather Jules fought in WWI. He was a pilot. He enlisted with a few friends and traveled from Trinidad, West Indies to the U.K. to fight for what he believed in. He never spoke of the war when he returned home, but unfailing visited his war buddies ever chance he got til the end of his life. I never got to know him as he passed away when I was 2yrs old. He kept journals of his time in the war that were sadly destroyed. I wish I could have read them, or known him. Today we remember him and all those who served and sacrificed so much for all of us. Please keep all of these stories going, so we will never forget, or take our lives for granted. I wish you all great peace. 🙏

I’ve been “leaf shopping” every time I’ve

I’ve been “leaf shopping” every time I’ve gone out for a walk these past few weeks. I now have quite the collection and have been putting my flower press through it’s paces, so I can preserve these beautiful bits of nature for use in an art project. At this point I have no idea what that will look like, I only feel compelled to save these precious bits of colour and random pattern in a way that has never struck me before.

This year it feels important to mark the small moments. They turn into gateways of wonder and awe and massive gratitude that nearly overwhelms me the more I slow down and appreciate them. Things I noticed and liked before (who doesn’t love Autumn leaves) are now like priceless miracles showing me how much beauty there has always been in my life that I just never really “got”. If you’re in need of something uplifting or a sign that yes, there is still magic out there, just go take a walk and find a few leaves, and really LOOK at them. We live in a Universe that loves us so much that millions upon millions of leaves become a vast array of splendour before they throw themselves into the wind, marking the change of seasons.

This is a story about “careful what you wish for”. I used to watch the original British show, Landscape Artist of the Year, and think to myself, “I’d really love to do that one day.” So when the call came out to audition for the Canadian premiere, I didn’t think too hard and just sent in my submission. (No time to talk myself out of it.) Cut to the day we actually had to show up and produce a painting in 4 hours (WAAAAAAAYYYYY outside my comfort zone since I work in lots of layers - and in front of an entire film crew, complete with judges, no less). It’s seriously one of the most exhilarating, rewarding experiences I’ve had in my art career and now I get to share it with all of you. I hope you get a chance to watch, and then tell me what you thought of the show.

 If you missed the original airing, now’s your chance to catch this sweet show featuring yours truly and 5 other wonderful artists, plus some amazing “wildcard” talent as we battle the elements and attempt to create a landscape masterpiece in just 4 hours. So grateful to @cbc, @cbcgem, @cbcarts, @marblemedia and @blueantmedia for this incredible opportunity. Painting alongside the fabulous @elzbieta.painting @jeffwilsonart @kyleeturunen @kamamak_art and Ron Kuwahara was the experience of a lifetime. (My favourite part of this whole thing was meeting the other artists. It was supposed to be a “competition”, but with art it’s really between you and yourself.)

Happy Thanksgiving, friends. This weekend I’ve b

Happy Thanksgiving, friends.
This weekend I’ve been reflecting on how many blessings have become visible in my life, not despite, but because of, these times.

Without this situation that we’re all in, all over the planet at the same time, no matter who we are, I’m not sure they would have meant as much. I was lucky enough to have dinner with my 80something parents last night - itself a great blessing.

And tonight I’m eating these potatoes that I harvested from my rooftop garden a few hours ago. (That moment in itself felt like a precious miracle.) I’m sharing a meal with my beloved. Tonight I am grateful for every moment, every mouthful, every small, previously insignificant thing. I wish you all the same awareness of how many blessings there are in your life.
